Star Topology

In a star topology, cables from each computer on the network
are connected to a central component, either a hub or switch.
A hub is a device that connects several computers together.
In a star topology with a hub, signals are transmitted from
the computer, through the hub, to all computers on the network.
On a larger scale, multiple LANs can be connected to each
other in a star topology. A star topology with a switch operates
slightly differently. A switch can interpret the destination
of data sent by a computer and route it specifically to that
machine.
An advantage of the star topology is that if one computer
on the network, only that computer is unable to send or receive
data. The remainder of the network operates normally.
The disadvantage of this topology is that because each computer
is connected to a hub or switch, if this device fails, the
entire network fails.
